Today, one-third of American consumers are turning to lease financing, even though it’s the most expensive way to operate a vehicle. Hamster created a simple tool allowing consumers to see leasing in a different light.
I designed the tool and the visual language surrounding it, based on the structure and process that Hamster Financial had developed. The goal was to create something emotionally engaging to hold the user’s attention while the true costs of leasing a vehicle is broken down.
The goal was to keep it all very simple—focus on the numbers, and the user's own journey. A vehicle loan is a big part of personal finance, and therefore personal.
An idea like Hamster's Lease Analysis Tool goes against the grain. Marketing companies the world over contend leasing is a normal part of life, and yet Hamster would prefer you own your vehicle. Asking people to leave their lease is asking them to acknowledge they have made a mistake, or had a lapse in judgement. This is an emotional journey for the user, and the tool needed to provide enough space for them to process this new way of thinking.
Beyond the colors and the pixels, we needed a simplified process for understanding leasing. So we broke down the costs to show the amount of money being lost by staying with a lease payment. We wanted the overall site to be minimal, straight-forward, and reassuring. So we chose colors that are calm and relaxed, and fonts that are simple and light-weight. We wanted to connect with the user and guide them through the process.
